Best route to travel from Washington DC to san Francisco in January?
We have to move our cars. How are the freeways in the winter on the East/West routes? Which is the best route?

Answer 1 :
The most direct route would be to get on I-70 into Pennsylvania, get on the PA Turnpike heading wast into Ohio, and stay on I-80 west all the way. It's 2328 miles, by Yahoo Maps. But this route will take you across all the Midwestern and Rocky Mountain states (IN, IL, IA, NE, WY, UT, NV) which are likely to get heavy snowfall. Another possibility is to take I-95 down to Richmond, I-85 to Montgomery, Alabama; I-65 to Mobile, AL; I-10 west to Los Angeles, and US-101 north. This will take quite a bit longer, but should get you around the worst weather. Go to Yahoo Maps to plot a route.
Answer 2 :
One would suggest a more southern route, as I-80, although more direct, cuts across Middle America in the dead of winter, so snow storms are forecast
