Does anyone know of ways to travel from Washington DC to Charlottesville, VA?
Hey...does anyone know of any ways to go from Washington DC to Charlottesville, VA (or UVA really) besides taking Greyhound? Washington, D.C. - 4 Answers

Try looking on craigslist under "community', then under "rideshare." You can watch for rides offered and/or post a message for a ride needed. You do need to use common sense. If the ride is offered by a male driver esp..you can ask for references and call them. It should be a bit cheaper than Greyhound, and it will definetly be cleaner, more comfortable, and your luggage will not be lost. Some people may be worried about riding with a stranger, but my experience is that it was FAR better than Greyhound...and being stranded for hours in filthy bus stations because there is no driver avail. for the connecting bus, and having your luggage lost ...even on a direct trip from one city to another ( I never figured out how they managed that).

You can take Amtrak. They run the "Crescent" each day, leaving DC at 6:49pm and arriving in Charlottesville at 8:52pm. The train station isn't too far from UVa. Here's a link to Amtrak's website: http://www.amtrak.com

Seattle has a lot of beautiful scenery almost everywhere you look. Most of the things you would probably want to see in Seattle are within walking distance of the downtown area or if not, you can easily get to them with public transportation. Here are some of the places most people enjoy: 1.The Pike Place Market: http://www.squidoo.com/Seattle-Pike-Place-Market 2. The Waterfront: You might enjoy taking a ride on a Washington State Ferry from the ferry landing on the Seattle waterfront to Bainbridge Island and back. 3. Take the Seattle Monorail: http://www.squidoo.com/seattle-monorail from Westlake Center in the downtown area to the Seattle Center to see the EMP/Sci Fi Museum and The Space Needle: http://www.squidoo.com/seattle-space-needle 4. What is the least busy time to travel through Washington, DC on Christmas day? I am hoping to get from my relatives house in Baltimore to Central Virginia by about 8 to 9 o'clock PM on Christmas day. Approximately what time should I leave to make it there with the Christmas traffic? I am going to be going to Lynchburg, Virginia. Washington, D.C. - 4 Answers People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions : Answer 1 : Traffic will be relatively light around Washington, DC on Christmas Day. You will probably not experience any major delays, no matter what time you go through or past DC. The reason is simple: virtually everyone is already where they want to be by that day. The day before or after there will be traffic, but not so much on Christmas Day. It's hard to say exactly what time you should leave, since "Central Virginia" is a large area. I'd say that it shouldn't take more than an hour and a half to get from Baltimore to just south of the Beltway in Virginia. UPDATE Mapquest says it should take a bit over 4 hours to go from Baltimore to Lynchburg. I'd round it up to 5 hours, allowing time for a rest stop. So, you probably want to leave Baltimore around 3:00pm. Answer 2 : the holidays often experience heavy and unexpected midday traffic. The Christmas day rush usually starts at about 9 or 10 a.m. and extends as far south as Fredericksburg and that is on dry pavement. The rush can go into the early afternoon. You may actually make better time early in the day December 24. The holiday rush usually doesn't hit until late morning and continues until late evening. Christmas eve traffic usually drops off after about 8 p.m. Answer 3 : The city itself tends to be eerily quiet on christmas day. The surrounding highways may have some traffic but if it's like previous years you can drive through DC without barely seeing anyone on christmas day. It's a bit spooky. Oh and don't go through any red lights (like I've done - it's very tempting since no one is around), BUT the camera's still work on christmas day and they will still send you a ticket :) Answer 4 : I would think that once you clear Washington it would be smooth sailing from there, and from Baltimore, I would presume you would take I-95 to the Beltway to I-66 to US 29, and then take 29 all the way down to Lynchburg. Traveling through the District itself is not recommended, since you're going to be stuck at a lot of traffic lights. Do you know how long it takes for you to get from Baltimore to roughly Manassas on a typical day? I would use that to figure out how long your trip would take that far with traffic, and then once you clear Prince William County on US 29, the rest of the trip should go smoothly with little to no delays, so whatever Google or MapQuest tells you for time there is probably fairly accurate. Just remember that whatever time you schedule for it, work in an hour or two for restroom and meal breaks. Don't try to do the whole trip in one sitting.

The most direct route would be to get on I-70 into Pennsylvania, get on the PA Turnpike heading wast into Ohio, and stay on I-80 west all the way. It's 2328 miles, by Yahoo Maps. But this route will take you across all the Midwestern and Rocky Mountain states (IN, IL, IA, NE, WY, UT, NV) which are likely to get heavy snowfall. Another possibility is to take I-95 down to Richmond, I-85 to Montgomery, Alabama; I-65 to Mobile, AL; I-10 west to Los Angeles, and US-101 north. This will take quite a bit longer, but should get you around the worst weather. Go to Yahoo Maps to plot a route.

I need to travel from VA to Washington(state). But I need to take my car. Now I understand their is auto train from FL to DC or something. But from what I gather there isn't one to Washington, correct? Other than take my car directly, is there some way I could travel to Washington with my car?

If you don't want to put that many miles on your car, I would suggest renting a U-Haul and towing your car. I've traveled cross country but did not want to put the miles on my car. I figured spending $450.00 to rent and tow my car cross country was cheaper than adding more than one-thousand miles on my vehicle. The repair and tune-up costs woudld be expensive.

No, there is no auto train coming out west. You can either hire someone to do the driving for you or hire someone to move the car for you. There are auto transport companies that will put your car onto a truck and deliver it to Washington State for you.
