When would be the best time to travel to Washington DC in the fall?
I live in Miami, and don't really get a sense for the changing of the seasons because of our tropical climate. I would love to take a trip to DC, as I have not been there, and would love to go during fall, when the leaves start to change colors to red and orange, and it starts to get a bit cooler. Probably late October or early November. The weather will be cold (by Miami standards) but should otherwise be pleasant. The daily temperature will probably be in the 40s and 50s. It's rare to have any snow that early. It's never clear when the leaves will change color in the DC area, as it has a lot to do with the weather patterns over the summer, including how much rain there has been. The fall is also a good time in terms of tourists--there aren't all that many.

I grew up in the DC area and even I still have trouble figuring out when the leaves change...it's difficult because every year is different depending on when it gets cold and how much rain we have. Also, about two hours west of the city, in the mountians will peak about 3 or 4 weeks before the leaves in the Washington D.C. area. In all honesty, the leaves in and around the immediate DC area are dull because there is to many people and to many buildings and not enough areas of just trees. What I would recommend you do, is come in mid to late October, so you can see the leaves peak in the mountains (Skyline Drive is spectacular, very crowded for fall, but spectacular) and see about a 60 % color change in the Washington D.C. area. However if you choose to stay in the D.C. area, come in late October to mid November and go to Rock Creek Park in the city and Great Falls just west of the city (the Virginia side has a better view). If you can, try to wait to plan your trip until early fall so you can have a better idea on when the leaves will peak in this area.

Mid-October to early November are really lovely here. The leaves are turning, the weather is still warm during the day and most of the tourists are gone. It gets chilly at night, but the sky is so blue it almost hurts your eyes and when a slight wind kicks up whitecaps on the river, you will never forget how lovely it is.

Because of the mix of trees in the DC area, leave don't change all at one time. Maples first, then others follow. Like others have said, it's hard to judge exactly when the leaves in the area will be best. I'd suggest you aim for mid-October. If you have some flexibility in when you have to make your decision, you might want to follow the local news station, here: http://www.nbcwashington.com/ They keep track of fall foliage conditions as the season approaches.

October is probably your best bet. Unfortunately, with the crazy weather the last couple years, it's been a little hectic, but any time during that month would probably be ideal. I wouldn't wait until November though, as another poster said, as (at least where I live) most of the leaves have turned brown and fallen by then. Good luck!

Security is always a priority during travel. but there's no need to be too nervy. Normal precautions include "Secure your purse or wallet, stay in well-lit areas, don't walk around in less-traveled areas late at night. In addition, some neighborhoods are not safe for travel by any method after dark. Generally, any place a tourist would be interested in seeing, is in a safe neighborhood. Those areas are typically safe at night, though visitors to Capitol Hill and Downtown should be cautious after hours. I've lived in the Adams Morgan neighborhood for almost 12 years and I have yet to have a problem. Granted, I don't walk the streets late at night if I can help it, and I keep aware of my surroundings. Do that, and you should avoid becoming a statistic.

If you stick to the normal tourist areas, the chance of something bad happening to you is essentially zero. To get into trouble, you'd have to do something really dumb, such as hang out in a ghetto area at night, or try to buy illegal drugs. Most DC crime is related to drugs.

ADDED INFO: FROM A DC COP: The shanking of tourists is very rare during muggings. A 9mm semi-automatic pistol is the usual weapon of choice. "How often will I be mugged / shanked...?" Common sense tells me no more than one time. Just curious tho----after the first time, would you go back out on the DC streets or would you go home? Your answer could cause me to change mine.

I would assume an average of one mugging per day. That may sound like a lot but remember it's an average so there will be some days when you are not mugged at all - maybe even a couple of days in a row where you're not mugged - but then some days you can expect to get mugged three time or so. Shankings are more rare. I'd say I've been shanked, on average, about once a fortnight since I moved to D.C. 6 years ago. Fortunately the excellent dining options D.C. has to offer more than makes up for the constant muggings and shankings. If only I had time to enjoy them between recovering from shankings and, you know, if I didn't have my credit cards taken all the time.

FACT: It is more dangerous to drive on an interstate highway than to walk down the sidewalk in any urban neighborhood in the United States. If you got in your car right now and drove to the worst ghetto in any city in the country, then spent the entire day there, the most dangerous part of your trip would be the driving. You are almost certainly not going to be mugged unless you try to sell drugs to gang members at 3:00 am. You should worry more about being struck by lightening. If you stick to normal activities in normal places, you will be fine.

Try looking on craigslist under "community', then under "rideshare." You can watch for rides offered and/or post a message for a ride needed. You do need to use common sense. If the ride is offered by a male driver esp..you can ask for references and call them. It should be a bit cheaper than Greyhound, and it will definetly be cleaner, more comfortable, and your luggage will not be lost. Some people may be worried about riding with a stranger, but my experience is that it was FAR better than Greyhound...and being stranded for hours in filthy bus stations because there is no driver avail. for the connecting bus, and having your luggage lost ...even on a direct trip from one city to another ( I never figured out how they managed that).

Seattle has a lot of beautiful scenery almost everywhere you look. Most of the things you would probably want to see in Seattle are within walking distance of the downtown area or if not, you can easily get to them with public transportation. The Waterfront: You might enjoy taking a ride on a Washington State Ferry from the ferry landing on the Seattle waterfront to Bainbridge Island and back. 3. What is the least busy time to travel through Washington, DC on Christmas day? I am hoping to get from my relatives house in Baltimore to Central Virginia by about 8 to 9 o'clock PM on Christmas day. Approximately what time should I leave to make it there with the Christmas traffic? I am going to be going to Lynchburg, Virginia. Washington, D.C. - 4 Answers People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions : Answer 1 : Traffic will be relatively light around Washington, DC on Christmas Day. You will probably not experience any major delays, no matter what time you go through or past DC. The reason is simple: virtually everyone is already where they want to be by that day. The day before or after there will be traffic, but not so much on Christmas Day. It's hard to say exactly what time you should leave, since "Central Virginia" is a large area. I'd say that it shouldn't take more than an hour and a half to get from Baltimore to just south of the Beltway in Virginia. UPDATE Mapquest says it should take a bit over 4 hours to go from Baltimore to Lynchburg. I'd round it up to 5 hours, allowing time for a rest stop. So, you probably want to leave Baltimore around 3:00pm. Answer 2 : the holidays often experience heavy and unexpected midday traffic. The Christmas day rush usually starts at about 9 or 10 a.m. and extends as far south as Fredericksburg and that is on dry pavement. The rush can go into the early afternoon. You may actually make better time early in the day December 24. The holiday rush usually doesn't hit until late morning and continues until late evening. Traveling through the District itself is not recommended, since you're going to be stuck at a lot of traffic lights. Do you know how long it takes for you to get from Baltimore to roughly Manassas on a typical day? I would use that to figure out how long your trip would take that far with traffic, and then once you clear Prince William County on US 29, the rest of the trip should go smoothly with little to no delays, so whatever Google or MapQuest tells you for time there is probably fairly accurate. Just remember that whatever time you schedule for it, work in an hour or two for restroom and meal breaks. Don't try to do the whole trip in one sitting.

The most direct route would be to get on I-70 into Pennsylvania, get on the PA Turnpike heading wast into Ohio, and stay on I-80 west all the way. It's 2328 miles, by Yahoo Maps. But this route will take you across all the Midwestern and Rocky Mountain states (IN, IL, IA, NE, WY, UT, NV) which are likely to get heavy snowfall. Another possibility is to take I-95 down to Richmond, I-85 to Montgomery, Alabama; I-65 to Mobile, AL; I-10 west to Los Angeles, and US-101 north. This will take quite a bit longer, but should get you around the worst weather. Go to Yahoo Maps to plot a route.

If you don't want to put that many miles on your car, I would suggest renting a U-Haul and towing your car. I've traveled cross country but did not want to put the miles on my car. I figured spending $450.00 to rent and tow my car cross country was cheaper than adding more than one-thousand miles on my vehicle. The repair and tune-up costs woudld be expensive.

No, there is no auto train coming out west. You can either hire someone to do the driving for you or hire someone to move the car for you. There are auto transport companies that will put your car onto a truck and deliver it to Washington State for you.

the "Boston Post Road"....what is now US Route 1...was pretty much in place by then....but not continuous enough for travel by carriage.....so on horseback, in good conditions, about 15 miles a day, allowing for ferry crossings of all the rivers in between,,,,,call it 10 days to 2 weeks. This is one reason that even though the election is in November, Inauguration of Presidents and Congress originally wasn't until March......it took a LONG time to get anywhere back then. Travel times didn't radically decrease until the railroads started up in the 1830's; indeed, Washington's army didn't move any faster than Cesar's.

Least expensive is driving. I guess your comfort is determined by the size of your car. Amtrak should go from Union Station to New York, but I thought it was rather pricey. $69per person for a coach seat on the regular 3 to 3.5hr ride or $146 for the Acela EACH WAY so double the prices I just stated - - and return trips could cost more. www.amtrak.com

Least cost is the bus. But to me, the best value is Amtrak. Leave from Union Station, just north of the Capitol Hill area in DC, and arrive midtown, beneath Madison Sq. Garden. No long commute from the airport - couldn't be easier.

There is a train that goes from central DC to New York, but as another poster suggested it is expensive. It is the most comfortable, and IMHO the most convenient. Greyhound and Peter Pan Trailways busses are less expensive and still comfortable. The least expensive is the Chinatown busses, of which there are many, that travel between the two. I am including some links to some of the companies that provide them. Generally they are about $20 each way and $30 round trip, or less than half the cost of the train.

Greyhound is pretty cheap and fairly comfortable. They have frequent buses to Port Authority for about $20 a person, each way. The DC bus station is pretty nasty, but you shouldn't have to be there for more than 45 minutes or so. For comfort, Amtrak is the way to go, even if it is more expensive.

Quickest, if you're near the train stations, may be to take the train from DC to Boston. The Acela Express would be your best bet. Driving from DC to Boston shouldn't take that long - maybe 5 hours? But it takes longer because it's a high-traffic route, and then the traffic in and around the cities is a misery. Flying is also an option, and there are lots of quick shuttles between DC and Boston. But factor in travel time to the airports, getting through security, it may be quicker to take the train. Boston is a great city to tourist. Make sure you walk the Freedom Trail - it has most of the famous sites right on it. For details, go to the website for The Lonely Planet or get one of their guidebooks. The Let's Go guides are also good books, but they don't have info online like Lonely Planet does.

Trains are okay, but.....ehh, flying is really the best way to go. Places to see; *Freedom trail, a lot of walking, but well worth it for the historic value *NorthEnd, oh the food! *Science Museum - really cool *Boston Aquarium - nice for an aquarium *Prudential Center - a neat mall-like area Boston is an amazing and diverse city. The T is fairly simple, yet like any other system takes time to learn. Go to their website www.mbta.com - which is being improved and will offer more soon. Once you get the hang of it, its simple and works well. That is the best way to travel once in the city. Walking is the second best way. Like every other city in the world, you should not be alone after dark. Also, the street signs in Boston leave A LOT to be desired. There are either too many or none! Apparently they are trying to correct this problem. Do your homework, and you won't be disappointed. Also, there are wonderful places not far from city proper, and you can reach these via the T and rental car. New England is like no where else. I hope you enjoy your trip!! Roaring Mice - driving is much longer than 5 hours - its about that far to NYC, driving time from Washington DC is about 8 hours, so long as you avoid the cities along the way.

There are some express flights which will get you from DC to Boston in about an hour. I know Delta used to have an express flight that went a few times per day. If that seems to be too expensive, then I would say take the Acela Train. Takes about 4 hours. . .Easier than driving, which can take about 7 or 8 hours, depending when you leave as far as traffic, etc. Once you're in Boston, make sure to check out lots of historic sites. Hmmm. I notice that all prior answerers ignored your request about what is cheapest (other than hitch-hike, bike or walking). It would be busses, and the cheapest of all (as low as $20) would be Fung Wah bus. Said to be quite a cultural experience also. As for Amtrak, you can take alternative intercity train to Acela (which is 6 1/2 hrs, not 4 as ShouldBeW writes [and driving is 9-10hrs, not 7-8]) at about half the price, but trip is 8 or more hours. Some airlines have weekend special deals. Or, instead of flying D.C. to Boston fly cheapo Southwest from Washington-Baltimore to either Providence or to Manchester-Boston regional. Cheaper, but you have hassle of taking local transit for the differences on either end (not so much of a problem to Washington-Baltimore, just take MARC or Amtrak trains, but from Providence you have to bus it from airport to downtown than T or Amtrak train to Boston South Station; from Manchester regional a bus shuttle to Anderson then T train to Boston North Station. However Providence is very much a much-to-see place also (not Manchester!!!) so you may wish to consider. Contrary to I_Love_li..., Boston (and most major cosmopolitan cities in the world!!) not so unsafe after dark (though occasional things DO happen). Also, please know that Boston is actually Boston and Cambridge. The cities lie across the river from each other and each is unique (someone living in Cambridge NEVER says he or she is living in the Boston area) with differing economies and things to see and do.

I travel between Boston and DC area for both business and visiting family a lot... like 2-3 times a month.... so I've taken just about every type of transportation like a million times. Driving sucks - it's 7.5 hours AT LEAST, not a particularly pleasant drive, and actually not as cheap as you'd think. (More than a tank of gas each way and $10-15 in tolls). The train is also not cheap and is a long trip (8 hours unless you take Acela, then it's still 6.5) - It's fun for the first couple hours but then it gets way old. It's also not as cheap as flying. Flying, then, is obviously my preference. The cheapest is generally from BWI - on AirTran you can fly for $130 round trip or so. Southwest isn't usually cheaper and they don't fly into Boston anyway.... you'd have to go into Providence or Manchester, each an hour away... so even if Southwest is $10 cheaper it wouldn't be worth it. If I'm traveling for work, I fly from National Airport in DC which is by far the most convenient although usually more expensive. The USAirways shuttle is GREAT if you happen to get a deal on them - it's SO easy. To see in Boston: Harvard Square, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and/or Museum of Fine Arts (Actually the Gardner would be my preference if you only see one of them).... if you're into art museums, that is. Of course, you have to pay admission and they're not as impressive when you're used to the Smithsonian, but the Gardner is interesting because of the history. The flight I took from Boston to Washington DC and vice versa was only around and hour and a half. I don't remember how much it was thoguh. It's around an 8 hour dirve and there's is Amtrak (train) service to and From Washington DC to Boston. I'm sure that's much less expensive than flying

The public transportation in DC really eats it - most expensive subway system in the nation, and most stops drop you off several blocks from your destination. The buses are oftentimes not air conditioned, arrive late, and it costs $5 to get a SmarTrip card - without this purchase, you cannot get free transfers. Not to mention that the traffic sucks, which means the buses are oftentimes caught in the same traffic everyone else is stuck in. Even if the Silver Line (which will eventually extend to Dulles) were built, you'd still be in trouble, since the subway doesn't open until 5am (and usually stops running around 11pm - then they wonder why everyone around here drives drunk all the time). If your ride can drop you off at a subway station (the closest ones are Vienna/Fairfax-GMU, Dunn Loring-Merrifeld, and West Falls Church), you can take the subway to Metro Center, which is a couple blocks from where you want to be. It's about a 30 minute ride, but only an idiot rides Metrorail and doesn't expect delays - the one thing Metro loves more than fare hikes is delays (elevator outages are #3 on the list). Nothing like sitting in a tepidly air-conditioned car, motionless, for five minutes. They never bother to tell you WHY you're not moving, just that you're not moving (in case you're too retarded to tell, and many Metrorail riders, in fact, are). The only other way you're going to get there is a cab - the buses that go between the airport and subway stations won't get you to the subway soon enough to get downtown. Cab fare will probably be around $20.

It is very easy! have someone drop you off at Herndon Monroe and take the 950 bus to West falls church. (the bus will only stop at Herndon Monroe and will take you straight to the metro station) and West falls church take the orange line metro that goes towards New Carrollton (orange) then get off the train at metro center, go up the stairs and take the red line metro towards silver spring. Get off at Union Station and that's it! it will cost you about $6.00. Good luck!

You can use the wmata trip planer which is the DC metro system website that includes both rail and bus system. When I put Herndon as departing destination it gave me a route departing from ELDEN ST & CENTER ST taking the 950 bus at 4:57am arriving at West Falls Church at 5:28Am. From West Falls Church Metro take the train at 5:42a towards New Carrolton and arrive to metro center @ 6:04am Exit station using exit 11TH ST NW & G ST NW. Walk approx. 1 block E on G St NW. Turn left on 10th St NW. Walk approx. 1 block N on 10th St NW. http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/tripplanner/tripplanner.cfm Metro opens at 5am on weekdays so I guess you will have some problems arriving before 6am. I wanted to go to Vancouver for a weekend, and I always thought I needed a passport to go. However, a friend of mine heard that you can get a special driver's license or something like that from the state. I wanted to know if this was true. If you reside in Washington and are listed as an actual RESIDENT of the state, you should be able to get that special license. I live in Michigan in the Upper Peninsula right next to the International Bridge to Canada. I don't have a special license because I have a passport I use. I do know several people from around here who have a special license for that purpose. Again, make sure that you are a resident of Washington. I don't know if you could still get the license if you were from Texas... Do some research on that!

Its not a drivers license, it is a special card from the passport people for people who travel back & forth frequently at borders. Look at the web. However, in your case you possibly would need a passport.

In Washington State you can get an enhanced driver's license. You can get it at the same time you go to get your Washington State Driver's license, you'll just have to fill out some extra paperwork. It costs a little extra too. It's an acceptable form of I.D. to cross the border into Canada. It takes a few weeks to get it, but it's cheaper and quicker then getting a passport. Hope that helps!

Amtrak runs seven days a week. It costs more than MARC, but on weekends it's the only option. On the positive side, it's quite a bit quicker than MARC, as it makes far fewer stops. Once you arrive at Baltimore's Penn Station, you can get on the light rail to take you to the Inner Harbor area. Westport had Pirate Daze. I would drive as fast as you can through Gray' Harbor county. It's dangerous there. You have to go through Aberdeen and they are killing people all over Aberdeen because of the Aryan Prophet.

If he's flying, and it's a direct flight, between 4 and 5 hours, give or take. I've flown between LAX and BWI as well as between LAX and IAD (Dulles), and depending on the winds, they're about the same traveling time. But don't forget he'll want to pick up his baggage and get a ride to wherever he's staying, so it may be longer before he has a chance to text you.
